Braid Group Actions via Categorified Heisenberg Complexes
We construct categorical braid group actions from 2-representations of a Heisenberg algebra. These actions are induced by certain complexes which generalize spherical (Seidel-Thomas) twists and are reminiscent of the Rickard complexes defined by Chuang-Rouquier. Conjecturally, one can relate our complexes to Rickard complexes using categorical vertex operators.

We use the new approach of braiding sequences to prove exponential upper bounds for the number of Vassiliev invariants on knots with bounded braid index, bounded bridge number and arborescent knots. We prove, that any Vassiliev invariant of degree k is determined by its values on knots with braid index at most k+1.

We define quasi-Garside groups and prove a theorem about them parallel to Garside’s result on the word problem for the usual braid groups. We introduce a group which we call the braid group B of Zn, and which bears some resemblance to mapping class groups. We prove that B is a quasi-Garside group. We give a ‘small presentation’ for B.
